Cakes baked the way a Hungarian grandmother taught them

Aggie has been baking for forty years. She learned at her mother's and grandmother's elbows in Hungary, and she has spent every year since refining what they taught her. Each cake is made by hand, in small batches, from real butter, free-range eggs and fresh fruit and nuts, then finished with the care of someone who has been delighting family and friends for a lifetime.

The difference you can taste

Small-batch cakes with an old-world soul

Most cake you buy has travelled a long way in a freezer. Aggie's cakes are baked in Marlborough, often the day before they are eaten. The sponge is moist because it has been made properly, not because of additives. The frosting is light because she whips it by eye, the way her grandmother did, until it holds a clean peak.

Her style is generous and joyful. Think deep layers, piped rosettes, a dusting of cinnamon, bright curls of orange zest and whole walnut halves pressed by hand around the sides. Every cake looks like it was made for a celebration, because in Aggie's family every cake was.

A chef's verdict

Aggie's carrot cake travelled to a Wiltshire restaurant for a family birthday lunch. The head chef tasted it, and before the afternoon was over the manager had asked for her trade price list. That is how Aggie's Cakes went from family kitchen to professional kitchens.
